Brighter days ahead

Despite Friday night's 2-1 overtime loss to the New Jersey Devils, it finally appears as though the Edmonton Oilers have started to turn the corner. Losing in OT is never fun but doing so on what was an obvious blown call against makes it even tougher to stomach.

Yak delivers

Heading into yesterday’s game between the Edmonton Oilers and New York Rangers, I took it upon myself to call out Nail Yakupov in my Thursday morning column. While the kid has had his fair share of ups in downs during his sophomore campaign, in my mind, it was time for #64 to step up to the plate and deliver.

Opportunity knocks for Nail Yakupov

Despite having won four of their last five games, the Edmonton Oilers offence has dried up of late. David Perron led the way with a hat-trick against the Vancouver Canucks and Taylor Hall was in on all three goals against the San Jose Sharks on Ben Scrivens Night but outside of that, it has been rather tough sledding for the Orange and Blue of late.

Bryzgalov has gone toe-to-toe with Scrivens

For the vast majority of Edmonton Oilers fans, the moment Ben Scrivens put the finishing touches on his NHL record setting 59 save performance against the San Jose Sharks was the moment he became this club’s #1 goalie.

Bryz comes up large

It was far from a masterpiece and at times, it was frankly difficult to watch but in the end, the Edmonton Oilers 3-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres was two points Dallas Eakins crew had no business earning. After watching Ben Scrivens be peppered with 100 shots over his last two starts, the Oilers clearly didn’t want Ilya Bryzgalov to feel left out.

With the 2014 Sochi Olympic break less than a week ago, hockey fans everywhere will be treated to battle between the NHL’s two worst teams on Monday night. Yes it’s the matchup everyone has been waiting for, as the Edmonton Oilers pay a visit to the Buffalo Sabres…or maybe not.

Eberle, Yakupov or both?

As of this moment, the Edmonton Oilers sit in twenty-ninth place in the NHL standings with forty-two points and just twenty-five games left on their schedule. They trail both the Florida Panthers and Calgary Flames by seven points and look to be a near lock to finish the year with the worst record in the Western Conference but fall just short of the pace being set by the woeful Buffalo Sabres out East.
