Canucks and Maple Leafs both fall short, Schultz signs with the Oilers

It has been a pretty hectic week for Justin Schultz and a handful of NHL organizations. The youngster was being pitched right, left and centre by teams hoping to convince the twenty-one year old defenceman, that they would be the best fit for him. In the end, he made a surprising choice but it was ultimately the correct one, agreeing to terms with the Edmonton Oilers. As far as opportunity and potential to be the guy on the blueline, Edmonton was the obvious choice but one that was surely not easy to make.

Martin Hanzal would be a pefect fit for the Oilers

At the moment,  there are two things that matter most to fans of the Edmonton Oilers, the possible signing of Justin Schultz and their latest first overall selection to enter the fold, in Nail Yakupov. Schultz would fill a huge void within the Oilers organization for a potential top pairing D man and Yakupov makes what is already  a pretty impressive group of elite talent upfront, look that much stronger.

Schultz should be the only UFA defenceman on the Oilers radar

With the clock ticking and decision day looming for the Justin Schultz camp to decide where the highly touted prospect will sign come July 1st, the Edmonton Oilers are desperately hoping the former Anaheim Ducks second round pick decides to come to Oil Country and play alongside the Oilers "Fearsome Foursome". If the soon to be twenty-two year old looks to go elsewhere, this organization will have to look somewhere other than the UFA market, to upgrade a backend that is in need of a major overhaul.

Oilers get it right and promote Krueger to head coach

It had been a long time coming but ultimately the Edmonton Oilers had their man the whole time. With the club having just announced Ralph Krueger as their new bench boss, the decision seems to be a popular one in Oil Country and more importantly, the right one for the Oilers and their still developing roster. Like his predecessor, the fifty-two year old Winnipeg native is a true teacher of the game and will play a big part in helping this franchise find their way back to respectability.

HHOF miss the boat on Lindros, out to lunch on Sundin

The Hockey Hall of Fame announced their 2012 induction class on Tuesday afternoon and there was one name that stuck out like a sore thumb. That being former Toronto Maple Leafs centre Mats Sundin. How he can get in on the first ballot, when former Philadelphia Flyers centre Eric Lindros remains on the outside looking in, is a mystery to me. To make matters worse, fellow first time nominee Brendan Shanahan somehow fell short of election, despite having better career totals than the former Leafs captain ...can you say Toronto basis? I sure can and when it's this obvious, it's not even funny.

Oilers need not qualify Linus Omark

You can slot me into the group of people that were hoping Linus Omark would have been given a legit shot of showing what he could do playing alongside the Edmonton Oilers best players. Unfortunately for Omark, that opportunity no longer exists. With that being the case, the organization should do the right thing and allow the diminutive winger to move on. With today being the deadline for clubs to qualify their restricted free agents, the Oilers have no real reason for keeping the talented Swede around and hence, have no need to make him an offer.
