Oil Notes: Chorney, Teubert Get The Call, New Line Combinations & Omark Injury Update

The Oilers made it official on Friday afternoon, as they recalled defencemen Colten Teubert and Taylor Chorney to help with their suddenly shrinking ranks on the backend. With four regulars out with a variety of aliments, Edmonton's starting defence will look like this against the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday night:

Game 18: Ottawa 5 Edmonton 2

The Edmonton Oilers took one of the leagues best home records, at 6-1-1, into last nights game against the Ottawa Senators. Unfortunately, the Edmonton Oiler team that showed up at Rexall Place resembled the club that has played in this rink over the last two seasons. They simply failed to compete and handed the visiting Senators two of the easiest points they will earn this season. The Sens left town with a 5-2 victory, in a game that saw the leagues best netminder, Nikolai Khabibulin, chased from the Edmonton net after only twenty minutes of play.

Cam Barker Out Three Months

Apparently Cam Barker's ankle was much worse off then was first feared. Tom Renney announced, after the clubs morning skate, that the 25 year old defenceman requires surgery on his injured ankle. Barker will be out of the Oilers lineup for at least the next three months and could very well bring his time as an Edmonton Oiler to an end after only twelve games.

Some Possible Targets

                                CARLE              FRANSON           GLEASON

With Edmonton Oilers GM Steve Tambellini most likely making calls around the league to see what defencemen might be available via trade, I decided to look over the other twenty-nine rosters and see what players could possibly be had in a deal. My search uncovered three names, that I feel fit the bill as the type of defenceman the Oilers would be interested in acquiring. Those players being Matt Carle, Cody Franson and Tim Gleason.

What To Do With The Oilers Blueline

With news coming out of Oilers camp that Cam Barker will be out of action for the next four weeks and Ryan Whitney at least ten days away from returning, has the time come for the team to look outside the organization to bolster the blueline?

Oil Notes: New Line Combos, Injury Updates and Linus Omark

The Edmonton Oilers returned to practice Tuesday morning out at Millennium Place Arena in Sherwood Park. The players hit the ice for their first post road trip practice and Tom Renney and his coaching staff unveiled some new line combinations. These were the forward units upfront:

They're For Real But It's Time For A Change

Now that the Oilers have returned home from a tough six game road trip, the time has come for this teams coaching staff to lock themselves in a room and have a lengthy brainstorming session. Edmonton has struggled to create offence all season long but winning games allowed them to not rush into any changes. Well, the winning has certainly stopped as the Oilers return home losers in four of their last five games. I would have to say the time for change is clearly at hand.

Game 17: Chicago 6 Edmonton 3

The Edmonton Oilers finished off their six game road trip with three games in four nights, against some of the best teams in the league. After struggling mightily in the first two games against Boston and Detroit, the hope was that the team would come out with a solid effort against the high flying Chicago Blackhawks. Unfortunately, the tough times continued as they were schooled for the third successive game. This time losing by a score of 6-3, to Western Conference leading Blackhawks.

Should Anton Lander Still Be Here?

With the forward group being as close to 100% healthy as they have been all season, the Edmonton Oilers now have to take a hard long look at what to do with centre Anton Lander. With the club wrapping up their six game road trip today in Chicago, word is that Lander will be taking a turn in the press box. With the the third line struggling all season long, one would have thought this move might have been made much sooner.
